Fishing Report for June 19
EDITOR'S NOTE: Due to rapidly changing weather conditions in the Sierra and Northern Nevada, anglers are urged to call ahead to the sources listed at the end of each area description for reports on the latest road and water conditions.
FRENCHMAN LAKE: Several good reports of fish being caught on a variety of lures this week. From shore, the Spring Creek campground seemed to have the best fishing. Anglers are catching limits using brass/red lures. Rainbow trout averaged 17-19 inches and about 2 pounds each. Trolling near Big Cove and Frenchman's boat landing was also good, floating lures on top of the water. Conditions can change quickly so call ahead. Wiggin's Trading Post, 530- 993-4683.
LAKE DAVIS: Fishing results are a mixed bag depending on how you fish. Trolling continues to produce limits. The only variable being quantity over quality as the average fish landed are on the small side with fish 15 inches and larger the exception. Fly-fishing and bait-fishing from shore is rated as slow to fair depending on the day. Surface water temperatures are 65 degrees. Dillard's guided fishing has been catching and releasing 20-30 fish per 4-hour trip. The effective depth has been 12 feet with the hot lure the No. 1 Dick Nite. Additional successful lures are Needlefish size No. 1, Red Dot Frog and Fire Tiger patterns. Dragging wooly buggers in olive and cinnamon also produce, (without flashers). Fly-fishing, while considered slow for most, has produced 20-plus fish days for those in the right place. The best fly-fishing areas are the west shore from Eagle Point North to Cow Creek and Freeman. The damsel hatch has been very short and sparse. Wes Ong landed 24 fish on June 13, 15 of which were 15 inches and larger. He was fishing from his float tube, fishing a damsel pattern on a floating line at a depth of 1-5 feet. Shore fishermen should fish early at Mallard Cove and Fairview while using Powerbait and nightcrawlers. The DFG will stock the lake with catchable rainbows this week just in time for the annual Rotary fishing contest. For info, call 530-832-5251. E-mail -- dollards@psln.com.
PYRAMID LAKE: The fishing has remained really good. It is getting tougher to find the fish, but when you find them, 20-30 fish days are still happening. The north end of the lake has had some great reports. Nymphing and pulling streamers both have been catching fish. The lake closes at the end of June. Reno Fly Shop, 775-825-3474. www.renoflyshop.com.
TRUCKEE RIVER: The flows have come down significantly in the past few weeks and we are nearing prime conditions. Hatches have started all along the Truckee, but are more prevalent on the Nevada side. Caddis, Green Drakes and Little Yellow Stones are all a major possibility. Nymphs to use for these include Poxy-Back Golden Stones, Burks' Green Drake, a variety of Little Yellow Stone patterns and Burks' Bottom Rollers. www.renoflyshop.com.
EAGLE LAKE: Fishing was good last week, but the time of the bite was different each day due to the thunder storms. There is a good afternoon bite and the fish are in the shallow water, 4-6 feet. This is good news for fly-fishermen, how long this condition will last is hard to say. Trolling at the Youth Camp with worms, lures and flies. Bobber-fishing has been good in the shallows, but the time of day is sporadic. For info call Eagle Lake Charters, 530-260-3474.
LITTLE TRUCKEE RIVER: The low flows coming out of Stampede Reservoir have kept the fishing good. Very small nymphs such as Zebra Midges, Pheasant Tails, Micro Stones, Baetis and San Juan Worms on a long and light leader have been working the best. Also, the carpenter ants have been out so take a few ant patterns in sizes 10 to 12. Reno Fly Shop, 775-825-3474. www.renoflyshop.com.
EAST WALKER RIVER: The water levels still are fluctuating a bit with the irrigation season and the end of the run-off. Despite that, the fishing has been very good. Nymphing with Copper John, Hare's Ear, Golden Stones and small midge pupa patterns have been working the best. Bring a few Stimulators and caddis along for the evening hatch. Reno Fly Shop, 775-825-3474.
EAST CARSON RIVER: Flows still are dropping, but are getting near prime for this time of year. Try some Golden Stones, Burks' Bottom Rollers, Caddis and Little Yellow Stones in both dries and nymphs. Reno Fly Shop, 775-825-3474. www.renoflyshop.com.
CROWLEY LAKE:
Fishing picked up last week. Sandy Point seems to be the hot spot
in about 16 feet of water. Try Stevie's Wonder gray/black about a foot off the
bottom. Performance Guide Service, 760-934-6101.
www.performanceguideservice.com.
HOT CREEK: Water flow is 37 c.f.s. Fly-fishing here is very good. The water flow is slowing and the fish are cooperating. Small nymphs like pheasant tails, hares ears and Birds nests. Some surface action with BW's mid day and caddis in the afternoon. Performance Guide Service, 760-934-6101.
UPPER OWENS RIVER: Water flow 73 c.f.s. Fly-fishing here is improving. Recent stockings by Ca. DFG has helped to bolster the trout population. Hares ears, WD-40s, prince nymphs and birds nests. Dry fly fishing is still good in the afternoons with caddis patterns and may fly emergers when the wind isn't blowing. Performance Guide Service (760) 934-6101 or 760-924-2181. www.performanceguideservice.com.
LOWER OWENS RIVER: Water flow is 196 c.f.s. Fishing is very good.Try zebra midges, cased caddis and small pheasant tails under the surface. Dry fly fishing is fair with some little yellow stone flys begining to show up. Good numbers of caddis in the afternoon hours. Performance Guide Service 760-934-6101. www.performanceguideservice.com
MAMMOTH LAKES BASIN: All the lakes are open. Best fly-fishing is at Twin Lakes with olive woolly buggers with a Prince nymph trailer. Performance Guide Service 760- 934-6101. www.performanceguideservice.com
JUNE LOOP: Gull Lake and Silver Lake best chance for fly fisher's with dark woolly buggers, zonkers and black matukas. Also try a Stevie's Wonder black/silver under an indicator. Performance Guide Service 760-934-1957 or (760) 924-2181.
SAN JOAQUIN\RED'S MEADOWS: Road is open. The river is high and cold. Performance Guide Service (760) 934-1957 or (760) 924-2181. www.performanceguideservice.com
UPPER TWIN LAKES: Thomas Buoyants worked well last week. Also, salmon eggs and rainbow Powerbait. Some 4- and 5-pound rainbows came out. Mono Village Resort (760) 932-7071.
LAKE SABRINA: (Bishop, Calif.). The rain hasn't deterred the fish from being caught, only some of the fishermen trying to catch those fish. Trolling flashers and a nightcrawler or using lead-core line (about threre colors) with a Thomas Buoyant (Red and Gold seems to be the favorite) put quite a few fish on stringers as did just floating across the lake with a nightcrawler. What was working at the inlets was just about everything -- especially the usual -- nightcrawlers, salmon eggs and Powerbait. Fishing from shore with a bubble and fly such as an olive wooly-bugger or red-throated olive matuka or just using a nightcrawler or Powerbait produced results. The Department of Fish and Game stocked Lake Sabrina with pan-size fish. Lake Sabrina Boat Landing, 760-873-7425.
SOUTH LAKE: For the third week in a row, afternoon thunderstorms were a daily occurrence in the high country. The fish apparently love this weather as the fishing was outstanding all week, especially on the weekend following a large plant by the DFG. Both shore and boat anglers reported a solid bite on brown mini-jigs, pink trout worms, red and gold Thomas Bouyants, inflated nightcrawlers and Chunky Cheese Gulp. It should be noted that the quality of fish the DFG has been planting so far this season has been excellent and has made for many happy anglers. The best spots on the lake continue to be the dam, the rock slide and the west shore. The big fish are playing hard to get, but that should change this week after the scheduled Alpers plant. A big load of 4-5 pound average trophy trout was stocked this week, so South Lake staffers should be breaking out the camera and scale often in the near future.
With the rain, hail and snow, the level at South Lake continues to come up fast. The water is about 10 feet up on the ramp so a few private boaters with small boats have been able to get their boats on the water now that the Forest Service has opened the ramp for the season. The ramp is still a bit treacherous and anyone using the launch does so at their own risk. Info: 760-873-4177. E-mail: sierrasmitty@cebridge.net
SOUTH FORK BISHOP CREEK: Creek fishing really picked up last week following a DFG plant. White mini-jigs, Gold Mepps, Salmon Eggs, Gulp Eggs and crawlers were the best producers. Parchers Hole, Willow Camp and the Tyee Bridge were the hot spots. Limits were the rule and some lucky angers reported catching and releasing as many as 20 fish in a day. According to hatchery staff at Mt. Whitney Hatchery, the stocking schedule will return to weekly plants this summer, which is highly preferable over the every-other-week stocking last season. Info: 760-873-4177. E-mail: sierrasmitty@cebridge.net.
BISHOP CREEK: Bishop Creek Canyon Summer Classic Derby. South Lake, Sabrina, North Lake, Intake II, Weir Pond and both forks of Bishop Creek will receive tagged fish for the derby that started June 1 and continues through the end of the month. Registration is $5 and you can register at Parchers Resort, South Lake Landing, Bishop Creek Lodge, Lake Sabrina, Cardinal Village, Creekside RV Park, Culver's Sporting Goods, Mac's Sporting Goods and the Bishop Chamber of Commerce. Bishop Creek Resorts 760-873-4484.
NORTH LAKE AND INTAKE II: North Lake was on fire last week following DFG and Alpers plants. Some of the resort staff fished the lake on Saturday morning and found wide open fishing on rainbows to 3 pounds with a few browns mixed in. Brown jigs were the hot ticket. Shore anglers were also seen doing very well at North. Wading Weir Pond has also been excellent on a combination of wild Brook and Brown trout and stocked rainbows to 2 pounds. Info: 760-873-4177.
