Dear Friends of Walker Lake,
It
looks like we’ve done it again, planned another springtime event
at Walker Lake to get folks on the water, hopefully see some birds
and make some new life-long lovers of this precious desert lake.
Mark your calendars for May 1,
2010 for Walker Lake Education Day at Sportsman’s Beach.
The location of the event has been moved back to Sportsman’s
Beach, because (you guessed it) state budget cuts at Walker Lake
Recreation Area have closed services to that area. Sorry, Eric, we
love you man, but we gotta go. Eric Johnson of Nevada State Parks
was awesome to us last year, expediting our special-use permit;
providing a generator and potties; putting up a road counter; and
even pulling weeds in the exhibit area.
Thank you Coreen Francis with the Bureau of Land Management for
her early commitment to continue the BLM’s cooperative agreement
with Walker Lake Working Group on this educational event.
Now that you know when and where the event will be, you may be
better able to schedule your exhibit or demonstration. Early
tentative commitments include:
·
Mineral County Cooperative Extension
·
Sagebrush Chapter Trout Unlimited
·
U.S.
Fish and Wildlife Service
·
Great Basin Bird Observatory
·
U.S.
Geological Survey
·
Nevada Department of Wildlife
·
National Fish and Wildlife Foundation
·
Walker River Paiute Tribe
·
Bureau of Land Management
We
are planning to provide a tent to shelter exhibitors again this
year, similar to last year, but hopefully have the exhibit area
completely enclosed. We will be putting out an RFP for a different
tent contractor.
For now, we won’t schedule sales at the event of any kind until we
can get our special-use permits with BLM processed. I will keep
you updated on our progress with permits.
Thank you for your interest in helping educate the public on the
need to save Walker Lake.
