Moapa Valley National Wildlife Refuge
The Moapa Valley National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) is located approximately 60 miles northeast of Las Vegas. The refuge is newly established and developement is not complete. The refuge is not open to the public at this time.
The Moapa Valley NWR encompases 34 acres of Mohave desert, palm trees, spring heads and associated outflow channels and aquatic habitat.
The Moapa Valley NWR is home to the endangered Moapa dace. Moapa dace are found only in the Warm Springs area of northern Clark County, Nevada and their outlet streams leading to the Moapa River. They are thermal endemics, that is they originated in the warm, isolated waters and are adapted to their particular living conditions of those regions. Cold water acts as a barrier, keeping them from moving away from their original habitat.
