November 2009 Prospects by Wes Ong

Truckee River: Flows are really low and maybe it is time to give it a rest. If you must, be aware that the Browns are spawning and give them a break. Beatis should be hatching mid-day.

Little Truckee: The pressure has subsided here and a good time to fish. Beatis hatches mid-day and a good time to swing a soft hackle through some of the tail outs. Small Brassie fished near the bottom is always a good choice.

Boca Reservoir: Missed this one last month but fishing the inlet with a streamer for the run up Browns could work this month too.

Lake Davis: The fish out last month was just ok. I think the fish were up at the north end of the lake. This month the fish should be down closer to the south end of the lake. Traditionally November yields the biggest fish of the year but judging from what I have heard about October the holdover fish from last fall are all gone. At least I have not heard of anyone catching any six to seven pounders.

Frenchman Reservoir: Fish are hotter and more plentiful than Lake Davis. I think that the Davis fish have been affected by the parasites and the Frenchman fish are healthier. The north end of the lake will do well until the water temperature starts to drop then fish the south end of the lake with the expectation of getting fewer fish but a better size fish. This fall the fish have been in one location one day and gone the next. Fly specific is not so much the case but finding the fish and getting your offering in front of them. Remember that a bump with out a hookup is either a small fish or a refusal. This is when I change flies.

Pyramid Lake: The Lake generally turns over this month and the fishing could be tough. Most fall fishing occurs up at the north end of the lake. Several years ago tubing in twenty feet of water in the Warrior Bay produce good numbers, not that I recommend tubing in Pyramid. Key on any bait balls and use a streamer pattern or white bugger.

East Walker River: Flows have been low so a low profile approach is necessary. Good streamer fishing should still be happening. In the lower water use a small size streamer and instead of a sink tip use a floating line with a little weight in the fly itself.

Eagle Lake: I heard that the lake is fishing well this year. Last couple of years some of us have ventured here in the late fall and have had a tough time. The spring was good so I think the fall should be just as good if not better. Here is a good spot. http://eaglelakefishing.net/eagle-lake-best-fishing-locations.php
