Dear Friends.
Even before
the BP oil disaster, sea turtles in the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of
Mexico were at risk from loss of nesting habitat, degradation of their
marine habitats, and entanglement in fishing gear.
Loggerhead sea turtles are the most abundant of the sea turtle species
in U.S. waters – let's keep it that way.
Right
now, loggerhead sea turtles could get stronger protections that will
help them survive the many challenges they face, including the BP Oil
Spill.
If recognized as
endangered rather than threatened under the federal Endangered Species
Act, they will be awarded stronger protections and conservation
resources.
The National
Marine Fisheries Service is accepting comments now--please speak up
today in support of the loggerhead sea turtle.
Every year from
April through September, tens of thousands of Northwestern loggerhead
sea turtles land on the beaches of the Southeastern U.S. for their
annual nesting season.
Make sure that vulnerable populations of loggerhead sea turtles are
reclassified from threatened to endangered to help increase protections
for this iconic marine species.
Sincerely,
Sue Brown
