Involved sportsmen,

This is an important week in Carson City.  All bills must come out of

their respective policy committees this week unless they're exempt!  So

its important to let your voice be heard this week before its too late!

That being said, the Coalition supports Senate Bill 287 that expresses

opposition to the location of proposed wind power on Mount Wilson and

Table Mountain in Lincoln County.  Please take the time to contact the

Senators on the Natural Resources Committee and voice your support of

this bill, and request that they pass it out of committee this week!

The Lincoln CAB has drafted a great letter (included below) describing

the serious wildlife consequences of the project.  Please use it for

talking points.

Here is the contact information for the Senators on the Committee:

TO: The Senate Committee on Natural Resources

RE: Senate Bill 287: Expresses opposition to the location of a proposed

wind power project on Mount Wilson and Table Mountain in Lincoln County.

Senators: Manendo, Parks, Lee, Rhoads, and Roberson:

The Lincoln CABMW is requesting support for Senate Bill 287.

Currently, a proposed industrial wind energy project is planned upon

the Mount Wilson, Table Mountain, White Rock Mountain, and Atlanta

Summit areas in northeast Lincoln County.   This is Nevada Hunt Unit

231. This project, at full build-out, would encompass over 31,000 acres

(50 square miles) of one of the most productive natural and cultural

resource areas in Nevada. The figure of 31,000 acres DOES NOT include

the needed access roads and transmission lines.

This area is also home to the core Sage Grouse population in Lincoln

County.  Disturbance, loss of habitat, and the dominant presence of

400-foot wind turbines is nothing more than a “death sentence” for the

county’s only viable population of Sage Grouse.  This area is also

critical summer range for Mule Deer and Elk.  Valuable fawning and

calving grounds will be lost if this project were to occur.

In terms of other valuable resources, this area is rich with mountain

springs and seeps that provide an abundance of water for wildlife,

livestock, wild horses, and vegetation.  This area also contains

quality mule deer and elk hunting opportunity.  There has been

productive livestock grazing on these mountains for generations.

Public access and dispersed recreation are yet another resource that

has been enjoyed for generations.  This area is the “crown Jewel” of

Lincoln County and it represents core values that Nevadans should be

proud of.

The Board of Lincoln County Commissioners have unanimously approved (4)

separate resolutions opposing this project.  Lincoln County supports

all forms of renewable energy where appropriate.  Lincoln County also

contains other areas where wind energy should be explored and has

offered alternatives accordingly.

One of Nevada’s most productive resource areas will be compromised if

this project is implemented.  In addition, support of this bill

coincides with other pertinent legislation aimed at increasing the

Greater Sage Grouse populations.

The BALANCE of natural and cultural resources on these mountains has

been sustained and beneficially maintained for generations.  It should

not be sacrificed.

The Lincoln CABMW thanks you for your consideration.
